The Huntsman: Winter’s War (2016): A Fantastical Tale of Love, Betrayal, and War

The Huntsman: Winter’s War, directed by Cedric Nicolas-Troyan, serves as both a prequel and a sequel to 2012’s Snow White and the Huntsman. Packed with stunning visuals, powerful performances, and an enchanting blend of action and fantasy, the film expands on the world of fairy tale kingdoms while introducing new characters and deepening old rivalries.
Years before the events of Snow White and the Huntsman, two sisters, Freya (Emily Blunt) and Ravenna (Charlize Theron), rule as queens. While Ravenna is the cruel and power-hungry sorceress, Freya is kind-hearted—until a heartbreaking betrayal awakens her latent ice powers. Consumed by grief, Freya builds a frozen kingdom in the North and trains an army of Huntsmen to serve her, forbidding them from ever falling in love.
Two of her most skilled warriors, Eric (Chris Hemsworth) and Sara (Jessica Chastain), defy her rule by falling in love. Freya’s wrath separates the lovers and sets off a chain of events that leads to rebellion and war. Meanwhile, in the present, Eric is tasked with recovering the lost Magic Mirror to prevent its dark power from falling into Freya’s hands. Along the way, he must confront his past and face off against both Freya and the resurrected Ravenna.
