Redbad (2018) – A Historical Epic of Rebellion and Faith

Redbad is a Dutch historical drama that tells the story of the legendary Frisian hero Redbad, who resisted the Christianization of Europe in the 8th century. Directed by Roel Reiné, known for his sweeping visuals and epic storytelling, the film blends historical events with a dramatic retelling of Redbad’s life, portraying his struggle against the Franks and his fight to preserve Frisian culture and traditions.

Redbad’s journey of exile leads him to the Vikings, where he gains new allies and perspective. As he matures, Redbad returns to his homeland, determined to unite the Frisians against the Franks and their forced Christianization, led by Pepin of Herstal and missionary Willibrord.
