The Great Wall (2016) is a fantasy action film directed by Zhang Yimou, starring Matt Damon as William Garin, a European mercenary who travels to China in search of gunpowder. Upon reaching the Great Wall, Garin and his companion, Pero Tovar (played by Pedro Pascal), find themselves caught in a massive conflict as they discover that the Wall is not just a fortification against invaders, but a defense against a monstrous threat.
The film takes place during the Song Dynasty, where the Great Wall is manned by the Chinese army, including the elite “Nameless Order” led by Commander Lin Mae (played by Jing Tian). The Wall’s true purpose is revealed: it is designed to protect humanity from terrifying, otherworldly creatures called the “Taotie,” monstrous beasts that attack in swarms.
As the Taotie attack, Garin and Tovar join forces with the Chinese military to fight off the creatures, all while Garin becomes entangled in the secrets of the Wall and the defense of China. The action escalates as Garin learns more about the Wallβs history and the incredible sacrifices made to keep the beasts at bay.
The film blends historical elements with fantasy, featuring thrilling battle scenes, vibrant visual effects, and a storyline that revolves around bravery, loyalty, and the struggle to protect civilization from ancient, otherworldly dangers.
