Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters (2013)
Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters (2013) is a dark fantasy action film, which reimagines the classic fairy tale of Hansel and Gretel with a grittier, more adult-oriented twist. The film is set fifteen years after the events of the famous story, where the siblings, now grown up, have become skilled witch hunters. It combines elements of horror, action, and dark humor, and features a fast-paced, bloody plot, focusing on the pair’s quest to rid the world of witches.
The movie begins with Hansel and Gretel, played by Jeremy Renner (Hansel) and Gemma Arterton (Gretel), having grown into formidable bounty hunters who specialize in hunting and killing witches. Their traumatic childhood experience, in which they were abandoned by their parents in the woods and nearly devoured by a witch (as told in the original fairy tale), has driven them to take up a violent crusade against witchcraft.
The main plot kicks off when the siblings are called to a town where young children are mysteriously disappearing. They discover that a powerful witch, Muriel (played by Famke Janssen), is orchestrating these kidnappings as part of a dark plan to perform a ritual that will make her invincible. As Hansel and Gretel uncover more about Muriel’s schemes, they realize the stakes are much higher than just saving the children—they are fighting to prevent the rise of a powerful, ancient evil.
As the story progresses, the siblings face increasingly dangerous witches and uncover long-buried secrets about their own origins. The film balances action, humor, and gore, with an emphasis on intense battles between the witches and the protagonists.
