Greenland (2020)
Greenland, directed by Ric Roman Waugh, is an emotional disaster thriller that combines intense action with a heartfelt exploration of family, survival, and humanity in the face of an apocalyptic event. The film stars Gerard Butler, Morena Baccarin, and Roger Dale Floyd.
Plot Overview
The story follows John Garrity (Gerard Butler), a structural engineer, his estranged wife Allison (Morena Baccarin), and their young son Nathan (Roger Dale Floyd) as they navigate a catastrophic global disaster. A comet, named Clarke, is hurtling toward Earth, with fragments expected to cause widespread destruction. Initially dismissed as harmless, the cometโs fragments soon cause devastating explosions, and scientists predict that a planet-killer impact will annihilate much of Earth.
John receives a government alert stating that his family has been selected for evacuation to a secret shelter in Greenland. This selection triggers tension and panic among their neighbors, who were not chosen, highlighting the chaos of such a catastrophic event.
As the Garrity family embarks on their perilous journey to the evacuation point, they face numerous challenges, including violent crowds, desperate individuals, and separation from one another. They must overcome their differences and work together to survive as the cometโs largest fragment hurtles toward Earth.
The filmโs climax occurs in Greenland, where the family struggles to reach the shelter amidst falling comet fragments. In a race against time, they manage to enter the underground facility just as the comet strikes, causing massive destruction on the surface.
The film concludes with the survivors emerging from the shelter months later to a drastically altered Earth, signaling the beginning of a long and uncertain recovery.
