The story follows Ronald Miller (Patrick Dempsey), a nerdy high school senior who longs to be part of the popular crowd. When cheerleader Cindy Mancini (Amanda Peterson) accidentally ruins her mother’s expensive suede outfit, Ronald seizes the opportunity.
