The Black Phone (2021) is a supernatural horror film directed by Scott Derrickson, based on a short story by Joe Hill. The film combines elements of horror and suspense, focusing on themes of childhood trauma and resilience.
Set in 1978, the story follows Finney Shaw (played by Mason Thames), a shy and intelligent boy who is abducted by a mysterious and sinister figure known as The Grabber (played by Ethan Hawke). Finney finds himself trapped in a soundproof basement, where he discovers an old black rotary phone that mysteriously connects him to the spirits of the Grabber’s previous victims.
As he communicates with these ghostly children, they provide him with guidance and advice on how to escape from his captor. Meanwhile, Finney’s sister, Gwen (played by Madeline McGraw), possesses psychic abilities and begins to have visions that may help her locate her brother.
