Priest (2011)

Priest (2011) is a dystopian action-horror film directed by Scott Stewart, based on the Korean graphic novel series of the same name by Min-Woo Hyung. The film is set in an alternate, post-apocalyptic world where humanity has been at war with vampires for centuries. The story follows a legendary warrior known simply as “Priest” (played by Paul Bettany), who defies the ruling theocratic authority of the Church to track down a group of vampires that have kidnapped his niece, Lucy (Lily Collins).
In this world, Priests are highly skilled fighters trained by the Church to battle vampires, but after the war is seemingly won, they are cast aside. When vampires reemerge under the leadership of a new villain, Black Hat (Karl Urban), Priest embarks on a dangerous mission to stop them. The film mixes elements of horror, westerns, and sci-fi, with heavy religious and post-apocalyptic themes.

Priest (Paul Bettany, left) finishes off Familiar #1 (Josh Wingate) in Screen Gems’ sci-fi action thriller PRIEST.

Priest received mixed-to-negative reviews, with praise for its visual style and action sequences, but criticism for its thin plot and character development. Despite its shortcomings, it attracted a cult following for its unique world-building and intense fight scenes.
