Disobedience (2017)
“Disobedience” (2017) is a poignant and thought-provoking romantic drama directed by Sebastián Lelio and based on Naomi Alderman’s 2006 novel of the same name. The film, written by Lelio and Rebecca Lenkiewicz, delves into themes of faith, desire, identity, and the complexities of personal freedom within the confines of religious and cultural expectations.
Set within the insular and deeply conservative Jewish community in North London, the movie explores the forbidden love between two women, offering a powerful exploration of self-discovery and the tension between tradition and individuality.

The story centers around Ronit (Rachel Weisz), a woman who returns to her childhood home after the death of her father, a prominent rabbi in the community. Upon her return, Ronit reconnects with Esti (Rachel McAdams), a childhood friend with whom she once shared a passionate romance before being forced to part ways due to their love being forbidden by their faith.
Esti, now married to Dovid (Alessandro Nivola), a devout man within the community, is trapped in a loveless marriage and struggles with her suppressed desires. The reunion between Ronit and Esti ignites a rekindling of their forbidden passion, leading them to confront not only their feelings for each other but also the oppressive societal forces around them.
