The Magical Legend of the Leprechauns (1999)๐ŸŽฌ๐ŸŽฌ

Released in a golden era of Hallmark fantasy films, this was one of those children’s movies that had no right to go this hard. Case in point, what seems like a lighthearted adventure at first about mischievous leprechauns and arrogant fairies…turns into a wide scale race war with a shocking amount of casualties on both sides. When they say this is based on Romeo and Juliet they mean it in terms of how heavy things get, and even the ending (although it’s a Hallmark video so it does ultimately take a brighter twist). Even Whoopi Goldberg playing The Grand Banshee basically becomes the personification of death, and the ordinarily immortal creatures of myth have to confront their own mortality when their racial animosity rages out of control.
