“Greenland” (2020) is a tense disaster thriller directed by Ric Roman Waugh and starring Gerard Butler and Morena Baccarin. The film revolves around a family’s desperate struggle for survival as a planet-killing comet hurtles towards Earth, threatening to annihilate all life. Unlike typical disaster movies, Greenland focuses more on human drama and the emotional toll of an impending apocalypse rather than relying on over-the-top action sequences.
The story centers around John Garrity (Gerard Butler), a structural engineer, his estranged wife Allison (Morena Baccarin), and their young son Nathan (Roger Dale Floyd). At the beginning of the film, Earth is on high alert due to the impending impact of a comet, named Clarke, which scientists initially believe will pass relatively harmlessly. However, when fragments of the comet start crashing into cities, it becomes clear that Clarke will trigger an extinction-level event.
John receives a government alert that his family has been selected for evacuation to a secret bunker in Greenland, one of the few places expected to be safe from the comet’s devastating impact. This sparks a race against time as John and Allison, along with Nathan, must navigate through societal collapse, violence, and chaos to reach safety.
