Alissa White-Gluz: The Unstoppable Voice of Modern Metal

Alissa White-Gluz is the formidable vocalist known for her work with the Swedish melodic death metal band Arch Enemy and her former role as frontwoman of the Canadian metal band The Agonist. Born on July 31, 1985 in Montreal, Canada, Alissa has become one of the most recognizable and influential female voices in extreme metal.

Her career breakthrough came as the original vocalist for The Agonist (2004-2014), where she showcased her unique ability to alternate between operatic clean vocals and guttural growls on albums like “Lullabies for the Dormant Mind.” In 2014, she joined Arch Enemy as successor to Angela Gossow, marking a new chapter where she focused primarily on her acclaimed harsh vocal techniques while occasionally incorporating clean passages.

With Arch Enemy, Alissa has recorded several successful albums including “War Eternal” (2014), “Will to Power” (2017), and “Deceivers” (2022). Her stage presence is electrifying – combining fierce energy with technical precision during performances of tracks like “The Eagle Flies Alone” and “Nemesis.” She’s known for her striking blue hair, corpse paint-inspired makeup, and commanding live shows that have elevated Arch Enemy’s global presence.

Beyond music, Alissa is an outspoken vegan and animal rights activist, often using her platform to promote ethical living. Her vocal versatility has led to collaborations with diverse artists like Kamelot, Tarja Turunen, and Carnifex.

Alissa’s contribution to metal includes breaking barriers for women in extreme vocals, proving that gender doesn’t define musical capability in heavy genres. Her dedication to pushing vocal limits while maintaining clarity and power has inspired a new generation of metal vocalists.
