Lucifer (2016–2021) is an American urban fantasy television series developed by Tom Kapinos, based on the DC Comics character created by Neil Gaiman, Sam Kieth, and Mike Dringenberg for the comic book series The Sandman. The character later became the protagonist of his own spin-off comic series, Lucifer, written by Mike Carey. The TV show stars Tom Ellis as Lucifer Morningstar, a fallen angel who abandons his throne in Hell to live in Los Angeles, where he runs a nightclub and becomes a civilian consultant to the LAPD. The series is a mix of crime procedural, supernatural drama, and comedy, with themes of redemption, free will, and self-discovery.
The show begins with Lucifer Morningstar, the Devil himself, tired of ruling Hell. He leaves his infernal duties behind and relocates to Los Angeles, where he opens a trendy nightclub called Lux. While enjoying his carefree life of pleasure and indulgence, Lucifer becomes involved in a murder case and meets Detective Chloe Decker (Lauren German), an LAPD homicide detective.
Intrigued by Chloe’s immunity to his supernatural abilities (including his power to compel people to tell the truth), Lucifer decides to assist her in solving cases, using his unique skills to help catch criminals. His ability to draw out people’s deepest desires, combined with his devilish charm, proves useful in investigations. As Lucifer works closely with Chloe, he starts to experience unfamiliar emotions, such as empathy, guilt, and a desire to seek redemption for his past.
The central narrative revolves around Lucifer’s journey of self-discovery as he grapples with his identity, the concept of good and evil, and the consequences of his rebellion against Heaven. Throughout the series, Lucifer must deal with both celestial and mortal issues, from his complicated relationship with his father, God, to his growing feelings for Chloe, and threats from his siblings and enemies from the supernatural realm.
