The film explores themes of survival, motherhood, and corporate greed, and it is widely regarded as one of the greatest science fiction films of all time.
Aliens was a critical and commercial success, earning several Academy Award nominations and cementing Sigourney Weaver’s Ripley as one of the most iconic female action heroes in cinema history.
Plot Summary
The film picks up 57 years after the events of the first movie, where Ellen Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) was the sole survivor of the mining spaceship Nostromo, which was attacked by a deadly alien known as a Xenomorph. After drifting in cryo-sleep for decades, Ripley is rescued by a deep-space salvage team and brought back to Earth.
Ripley is debriefed by the Weyland-Yutani Corporation, who dismiss her warnings about the Xenomorph. She also learns that the planet LV-426, where the alien was first discovered, has been colonized by humans, but communication with the colony has suddenly been lost. Reluctantly, Ripley agrees to accompany a squad of Colonial Marines sent to investigate the situation on LV-426, in exchange for a promise that they will exterminate the alien threat.
The mission to LV-426 turns into a nightmare when the team discovers that the colonists have been wiped out by an infestation of Xenomorphs, which are being bred by a massive Alien Queen. Ripley, along with the squad, faces relentless attacks from the aliens, as they fight for survival and attempt to escape the planet before it is overrun. Along the way, Ripley bonds with Newt (Carrie Henn), a young girl and the sole survivor of the colony, and develops a deep maternal instinct to protect her.
The film’s climax sees Ripley in a showdown with the Alien Queen, leading to an explosive final confrontation aboard the Sulaco spaceship.
