Troy (2004) is an epic historical war film directed by Wolfgang Petersen, starring Brad Pitt, Eric Bana, Orlando Bloom, Diane Kruger, Sean Bean, and Peter O’Toole. The movie is loosely based on Homer’s Iliad and focuses on the Trojan War, a legendary conflict between the Greeks (Achaeans) and the city of Troy.
The story begins with Paris (Orlando Bloom), a Trojan prince, who falls in love with Helen (Diane Kruger), the wife of the Spartan king Menelaus (Brendan Gleeson). Paris takes Helen back to Troy, angering Menelaus, who sees this as a deep insult. Menelaus convinces his brother, Agamemnon (Brian Cox), king of Mycenae, to wage war against Troy, using Helen’s abduction as a pretext. Agamemnon’s true motive, however, is to expand his empire and gain control over the wealthy city of Troy.
Achilles (Brad Pitt), the greatest warrior of Greece, reluctantly joins the campaign, driven more by the desire for glory than loyalty to Agamemnon. Hector (Eric Bana), the noble prince of Troy and Paris’s older brother, becomes Troy’s primary defender against the Greeks. As the Greek forces lay siege to Troy, personal rivalries and desires for glory shape the course of the war, leading to legendary duels, intense battles, and the tragic fall of the city.
The film culminates in the Trojan Horse deception, where the Greeks hide inside a giant wooden horse and are brought into the city of Troy, allowing them to launch a surprise attack that leads to the city’s downfall.
