The story is set against the backdrop of the ill-fated maiden voyage of the RMS Titanic, which sank in 1912 after hitting an iceberg. The film primarily follows two characters:
Jack Dawson (Leonardo DiCaprio), a penniless artist who wins a third-class ticket to board the Titanic.
Rose DeWitt Bukater (Kate Winslet), a young woman from a wealthy family who is being forced into an arranged marriage with the affluent but controlling Cal Hockley (Billy Zane).
