The Last Voyage of the Demeter (2023)

The Last Voyage of the Demeter (2023) is a horror film directed by André Øvredal, based on a chilling chapter from Bram Stoker’s classic novel Dracula. The film focuses on the doomed journey of the Russian ship, the Demeter, which transports Count Dracula from Transylvania to England, chronicling the terrifying events that unfold onboard.
The story is set in 1897, where the crew of the Demeter discovers they are transporting a mysterious cargo—a series of large wooden crates. Unbeknownst to them, the crates contain Dracula, who begins preying on the crew members one by one during the voyage. As the ship sails closer to England, the surviving crew members must confront the growing terror, realizing that they are trapped at sea with a deadly and powerful predator.
Corey Hawkins plays Clemens, a doctor who joins the crew and becomes the central figure trying to survive and uncover the horrifying truth. The film also stars Aisling Franciosi, Liam Cunningham, and David Dastmalchian. Unlike many modern vampire films, The Last Voyage of the Demeter leans into gothic horror, with an atmospheric and claustrophobic setting, creating a sense of dread and isolation.
The film has been praised for its production design, creating an immersive, period-accurate atmosphere, and for bringing the terrifying and mythic nature of Dracula back to the forefront. While some critics found the pacing uneven, it has been generally appreciated for its dark, moody tone and suspense, making it a unique addition to vampire horror.
