The Last Legion (2007) is a historical fantasy-adventure film directed by Doug Lefler, loosely based on the 2002 novel of the same name by Valerio Massimo Manfredi. The film blends history and legend, exploring the fall of the Roman Empire and the rise of King Arthur’s myth. The movie stars Colin Firth, Ben Kingsley, Aishwarya Rai, Thomas Sangster, and Kevin McKidd.
The story takes place in 476 AD, as the Western Roman Empire is crumbling. The young emperor Romulus Augustus (Thomas Sangster) is crowned as the new Caesar of the Roman Empire, but shortly after his coronation, the barbarian warlord Odoacer (Peter Mullan) leads a revolt and captures the city of Rome. Romulus is imprisoned on the island fortress of Capri, along with his mentor Ambrosinus (Ben Kingsley), a mysterious druid with hidden powers.
While in captivity, Romulus discovers a legendary sword, said to have belonged to Julius Caesar. This sword is later revealed to be the famous Excalibur, a key element in the Arthurian legends. Meanwhile, a small band of loyal Roman soldiers, led by the brave and noble Aurelius (Colin Firth), is tasked with rescuing Romulus from captivity and fleeing to safety.
Aurelius and his comrades, including the skilled warrior Mira (Aishwarya Rai), free Romulus and Ambrosinus, and they embark on a perilous journey to the Roman outpost of Britannia, where they hope to find sanctuary. However, they are pursued by Odoacer’s mercenary general, Wulfila (Kevin McKidd), who is determined to capture Romulus and the legendary sword.
In Britannia, the group encounters the remnants of the Roman Ninth Legion, a once-mighty force now reduced to a small band of loyal soldiers. They join forces to protect Romulus and the future of Rome. In the final battle, they must defend themselves against Wulfila’s forces and ensure the survival of both the Roman legacy and the myth of Excalibur.
