The Count of Monte Cristo (2002) is an adventure drama film directed by Kevin Reynolds, based on the classic novel of the same name by Alexandre Dumas. The film stars Jim Caviezel as Edmond Dantès, Guy Pearce as Fernand Mondego, and Richard Harris as Abbé Faria.
The story follows Edmond Dantès, a young sailor who is falsely accused of treason by his jealous rival, Fernand Mondego, and imprisoned in the Château d’If. After years of suffering and despair, he befriends an elderly inmate, Abbé Faria, who educates him and reveals the location of a hidden treasure on the Isle of Monte Cristo. Upon escaping prison, Dantès finds the treasure and reinvents himself as the wealthy Count of Monte Cristo.
With his newfound wealth and power, Dantès meticulously plots his revenge against those who betrayed him, including Fernand and others involved in his wrongful imprisonment. The film explores themes of betrayal, revenge, redemption, and the consequences of vengeance.
