The Green Mile (1999) is a critically acclaimed drama film written and directed by Frank Darabont, based on Stephen King’s 1996 novel of the same name. The movie is set in the 1930s and tells a poignant story about life, death, and the supernatural, focusing on the interactions between death row inmates and the guards in charge of them. It stars Tom Hanks, Michael Clarke Duncan, David Morse, and Sam Rockwell.
The film is set in 1935 at Cold Mountain Penitentiary’s death row, also known as “The Green Mile,” because of the green linoleum that lines the floor. The story is told through the eyes of Paul Edgecomb (Tom Hanks), the head prison guard who oversees death row. Paul has spent years guiding condemned prisoners to the electric chair, but his life changes forever when a new inmate arrives: John Coffey (Michael Clarke Duncan), a physically imposing man convicted of raping and murdering two young girls.
Despite his fearsome appearance, John Coffey is gentle and kind-hearted, and it soon becomes clear that he possesses extraordinary, supernatural abilities, including healing powers. As Paul and the other guards get to know Coffey, they begin to question whether he could actually be guilty of the crimes he’s accused of.
The film explores the moral dilemmas faced by the guards as they grapple with the possibility that an innocent man is on death row, as well as Coffey’s mysterious abilities. Throughout the film, Coffey performs miraculous acts, including healing Paul’s painful urinary infection and resurrecting a fellow guard’s dying wife from a fatal tumor. His powers bring hope and redemption, but they also make his ultimate fate all the more tragic.
