Brotherhood of the Wolf (Le Pacte des Loups, 2001) is a French historical action-horror film directed by Christophe Gans. The movie is a unique blend of multiple genres, combining historical drama, martial arts, horror, and mystery, and it gained international attention for its unusual mix of styles, captivating visuals, and intense action sequences.
Set in 18th-century France, Brotherhood of the Wolf is loosely based on the true story of the Beast of Gévaudan, a mysterious creature that terrorized the region of Gévaudan between 1764 and 1767, killing hundreds of people. The French government sends Grégoire de Fronsac (played by Samuel Le Bihan), a royal naturalist and knight, along with his Iroquois companion Mani (played by Mark Dacascos), to investigate the killings and find the beast.
As Fronsac and Mani dig deeper, they uncover a conspiracy far greater than just a monstrous creature. The investigation reveals political intrigue, a secret society known as the Brotherhood of the Wolf, and a sinister plot that uses the beast as a tool for controlling the population through fear.
