The Woman King (2022) is a historical epic film directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood, starring Viola Davis, Thuso Mbedu, Lashana Lynch, and John Boyega. The film is inspired by true events and tells the story of the Agojie, an all-female warrior unit that protected the African Kingdom of Dahomey in the 19th century. The film explores themes of empowerment, courage, and resistance, while highlighting a unique part of African history.
Set in the early 1800s, The Woman King follows General Nanisca (Viola Davis), the fierce and highly skilled leader of the Agojie warriors. The Kingdom of Dahomey, ruled by King Ghezo (John Boyega), faces the threat of invasion from neighboring tribes and the encroaching influence of European colonizers who are heavily involved in the transatlantic slave trade.
General Nanisca is tasked with training the next generation of warriors, including a young recruit named Nawi (Thuso Mbedu), a headstrong girl who refuses to accept the traditional role expected of women. As Nanisca prepares her warriors for battle, she also grapples with personal demons and the moral complexities of the Dahomey Kingdom’s involvement in the slave trade. The film builds up to an epic confrontation where the Agojie must defend their land and people against overwhelming odds, showcasing their bravery, discipline, and unmatched combat skills.
