The plot centers around Dr. Daniel Jackson (played by James Spader), a linguist and archaeologist who is recruited by the U.S. Air Force to help decode the hieroglyphs on a mysterious ancient device called the Stargate. This device, discovered in Egypt, turns out to be a portal capable of creating a wormhole to a distant planet. Colonel Jack O’Neil (played by Kurt Russell), a battle-hardened military officer with a tragic past, is put in charge of leading a team through the Stargate to explore what lies on the other side.
Upon entering the Stargate, the team arrives on a desert planet called Abydos, which is ruled by an alien being who poses as the Egyptian god Ra. This being has enslaved the local population and uses advanced technology to maintain control. The story unfolds as Jackson, O’Neil, and their team work to overthrow Ra and free the people of Abydos while trying to find a way back to Earth.
