The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies (2014)

The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies (2014) is the third and final installment in The Hobbit trilogy, directed by Peter Jackson. The film is based on the latter chapters of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit, culminating the story of Bilbo Baggins and Thorin Oakenshield’s quest to reclaim the Lonely Mountain and its treasures from the dragon Smaug. This epic fantasy concludes the prequel series to The Lord of the Rings, delivering intense battles, high stakes, and a blend of character-driven and action-packed scenes.
The film picks up immediately after The Desolation of Smaug (2013), with Smaug (voiced by Benedict Cumberbatch) attacking Lake-town. Bard the Bowman (Luke Evans) kills the dragon, saving his people but leaving them displaced and seeking refuge in the ruins of Dale. Meanwhile, Thorin Oakenshield (Richard Armitage), now entrenched in the Lonely Mountain with his companions, succumbs to “dragon sickness,” a greed-induced obsession with the mountain’s gold, which causes tension with Bilbo (Martin Freeman) and his allies.
With Smaug’s death, multiple armies—including the Elves, Dwarves, Men, Orcs, and Eagles—converge on the mountain to claim its riches or gain a strategic advantage. The resulting Battle of the Five Armies is a sprawling, intense clash that tests the characters’ courage, loyalty, and honor. Thorin must confront his inner demons to unite the Dwarves, while Bilbo faces difficult choices about loyalty and friendship as he witnesses the horrors of war.
